Opera Gene Features and Topics

What can you expect from Opera Gene?  We will cover a range of topics of interest to the opera fan, including comment on opera topics, performances, and reviews; opera listings in the mid-Atlantic region; info on opera venues and other opera websites; and various ways to listen to and enjoy opera.  Projects will include developing a listing of educational insights for opera and developing a list of opportunities for children to be exposed to opera.  I plan to enlist readers help with these projects.  The focus will be on things of interest and helpful to the any opera fan, not the expert.

Approach and Coverage

The internet offers a way to connect dispersed individuals and groups, like opera fans, and I decided to take advantage of that medium to share my love of opera.  This web site is for opera fans, people who genuinely like opera.  Experience or expertise in music or opera is not required, though an interest in learning more is anticipated.  Thus, the coverage is directed to enhancing access for the opera fan.  I am located in the Washington DC area, but because we have a highly mobile, internet connected society, OperaGene will expand out from DC to cover opera performances in the mid-Atlantic region from Philadelphia to Norfolk to Richmond to Pittsburgh and points in between, and throw in NYC for good measure on occasion. In fact, I plan to take mini-vacations to other cities in our region to enjoy opera there and will report on these and encourage readers to do the same.  Our focus will clearly be on the mid-Atlantic region, but one cannot ignore the Mecca for opera in the US, the Metropolitan Opera.
